How your take-home pay is worked out
Your net pay starts with gross salary. We subtract resident income tax using the current ATO brackets, apply the low income tax offset (LITO), add the 2% Medicare levy, and — if you have a study loan — the HELP repayment. What remains is what lands in your bank account.
Employer super at 12% is a separate contribution paid to your fund. Tick “includes super” if your advertised package is inclusive.
Australian resident tax rates 2026–27
| Taxable income | Tax rate |
|---|---|
| $0 – $18,200 | Nil |
| $18,201 – $45,000 | 15% on each $1 over $18,200 |
| $45,001 – $135,000 | 30% on each $1 over $45,000 |
| $135,001 – $190,000 | 37% on each $1 over $135,000 |
| $190,001 and over | 45% on each $1 over $190,000 |
Add the 2% Medicare levy, and a HELP repayment if you have a study loan. The low income tax offset (up to $700) reduces tax for lower earners.
Tips to read your result
- Average vs marginal rate: the average rate is your total tax divided by income; the marginal rate is the tax on your next dollar, such as a pay rise.
- Payslips can differ: employers withhold using ATO schedules, and the difference settles at tax time.
- Salary sacrifice: pre-tax super contributions lower taxable income but not your HELP repayment income.

Frequently asked questions
How is net pay calculated in Australia?
Net (take-home) pay is your gross salary minus income tax, the 2% Medicare levy and any HELP/HECS repayment. Employer superannuation (12%) is paid on top of your salary and is not part of your take-home pay.
What are the 2026–27 Australian tax rates?
For residents: $0–$18,200 nil; $18,201–$45,000 15c per $1 over $18,200; $45,001–$135,000 $4,020 plus 30c over $45,000; $135,001–$190,000 $31,020 plus 37c over $135,000; over $190,000 $51,370 plus 45c over $190,000.
Is superannuation included in my salary?
Many job ads quote a package including super. Tick “My pay includes 12% super” and the calculator will strip it out before working out tax.
Does this calculator include the HELP/HECS repayment?
Yes. Tick the HELP box to include the compulsory repayment using the ATO marginal repayment rates.
Is my data stored?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server.
